Introduction

Welcome. This will be the story of my experiences as a Foreign Service Officer deploying to Afghanistan. It is meant as a chronicle of and tribute to the patriotism and sacrifice the men and women I am proud to call colleagues, to the families that share the joys, hardships and opportunities of this unique career, and to the national (host-country) employees whose dedication to a country that most will never see is humbling in the extreme. Enjoy the ride, and I welcome your thoughts on any part of this blog at any time.

Top Acronyms and Slang

I love this stuff!!!:

KLE = my favorite euphemism. It shows up all the time, you'll catch on

IOT = "in order to" - I'm thinking of proposing a new rule that an acronym must conserve at least 10 characters

WPN= "weapon" - a new world record! a mere 3 characters conserved. Hat's off to that bold PowerPoint author.

PRT= "Provincial Reconstruction Team" - my work/home

FOB= "Forward Operating Base" - also my work/home

POI = EITHER "Point Of Impact" (as in kaboom) OR "Purpose of Instruction" - as in did you learn your lesson?

ISO = "In Support Of" also fails the 10 character rule, (unless you count spaces)

MAM= "Military Aged Male" - sorry, but I find it hard to worry about a bunch of MAMs gathering by the bazaar...

MRAP= "Mine-Resistant Ambush Proof vehicle" - Think supersized, 20,000 pound brown Suburban with a gun turret

GIRoA= "Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan" - the people we are here to support and assist

GOV/DEV= "Governance and Development" - the things that we are trying to help GIRoA improve/advance

ROK= "Republic of Korea" - or just "Korean"

CMST= "Civ-Mil Support Team" - the dozen or so Americans working with the ROK PRT on GOV/DEV in Parwan
